What. An. Absolute. Riot.
Taking the loose bones of Shrek 2, aka the best in the franchise, of course, Swamplesque 2 gleefully chews them up and spits them out in a whirlwind of high-octane burlesque, camp comedy and swampy chaos.
When the lights go up, it is immediately clear that this is no retelling but rather a theatrical tribute in the name of rousing the best reactions from the audience. And boy does it.
Your cheeks will hurt from smiling, ooh-ing and aah-ing, your voice will likely be hoarse from cheering far too loudly, and your hands will sting from the sheer amount of applause.
Every performance is cathartic, every musical number is nothing less than a glory-fest, and every costume is undeniably dazzling on the performers (before it is inevitably removed and tossed into the audience).
Tash York is absolutely magical as the fairy godmother and left the crowd, including this reviewer, absolutely feral. Her powerhouse performance of “I Need a Hero” alone proves there is not a stage she can’t own.
It’s spicy, it’s outrageous, and it will almost certainly make you blush more than once.
Comedy is woven seamlessly into every performance, and the show never slows down, not even for a second. Just when you think you’ve seen the best it has to offer, the next performer hits the stage and blows you away.
Let’s be clear, other than the Shrek-related costumes and rough storyline, this is no fairytale fit for children – it’s R-rated. For more age-appropriate ogre tales, leave the kids at home with the movie playing. But for all the other swamp-dwellers hoping to catch some raunchy fun, outrageous comedy, and lots and lots of glitter, this is the show to see.
